Real chess, without a complicated start.
MineChess is a free browser chess game with character pieces. Start a computer game immediately, practise a short lesson, solve a puzzle or invite a friend. A download and account are not required to try it.
Start a game in one click
Choose Play free for a forgiving computer opponent. No name entry or setup wizard stands between you and the board. Choose any of the six opponents from the homepage or follow the Adventure chapters. Opponent labels describe MineChess practice settings, not official chess ratings.
Move your pieces
Tap or click a piece, then one of its highlighted destinations. Select another of your pieces to change your choice. With a keyboard, move between squares with the arrow keys and use Enter or Space to select a piece and its destination.
Pawns move forwards and capture diagonally. Knights jump in an L shape. Bishops move diagonally, rooks horizontally or vertically, and queens combine those directions. A king moves one square and must never move into check. The interactive lessons let you try these ideas on a board.
Special moves and game endings
Castling moves your king two squares towards a rook, then moves that rook to the square the king crossed. The king and rook must not have moved, the path must be clear, and the king must not be in check or cross an attacked square. Select the king’s destination; MineChess moves the rook automatically.
A pawn reaching the far rank can become a queen, rook, bishop or knight. Choose from the promotion panel. En passant is available immediately after the opponent’s two-square pawn advance when the position permits it.
Checkmate ends the game when a checked king has no legal escape. Stalemate is a draw, not a win. MineChess also automatically ends games on threefold repetition, insufficient mating material and the 50-move rule, rather than requiring a tournament-style claim.
Practise without pressure
Computer and same-device games have no clock. Solo practice offers unlimited help in three steps: a clue, a piece and a move. Hint steps and undo use are saved with the game. You can choose an independent challenge or switch back to supported practice without restarting. Normal two-player games have no hints or undo; same-device Teaching mode enables help only after both players agree. Online friend games do not provide these controls. You can switch to classic symbols, show piece names, change board themes and reduce motion in Settings.
Leave now, carry on later
Recent unfinished games are saved on this browser and can be continued from the homepage or Progress. Up to 12 recent unfinished games and 24 puzzle snapshots are kept on the device. Your puzzle attempt and hint steps survive reloading. Sign in or create an account with email, Google or Apple and choose to keep your own guest progress and preferences. Completed activities sync to the account; unfinished sessions and preferences remain on this browser. If guest progress was left behind by an older sign-in route, the Progress page offers an explicit recovery choice. Private friend-game keys remain on the browser unless you use the separate private email recovery flow.
